A walk on Mars...with Spirit & Opportunity, the Mars Exploration Rovers

Geodesy Mars Atlas section MC23. This is the Aeolis region, the crater right-center with the long southward channel is Gusev Crater. Spirit landed in the center of the crater; the sweetspot; right on target. Linked to original file; MGS MOC Release No. MOC2-299, 1 february 2002.

Esa Mars Express orbital color image. Linked to ESA.

Zoom in on Gusev that I assembled from USGS geological map of the area and zoom in on 256IMG version of the Geodesy Mars Atlas. Linked to high-res files.

An Odyssey orbital image with Columbia Hills just right of center. The large partially buried crater to the east of the Hills is Thyra Crater. Slightly to the west is a quite dusty-looking crater; Castril Crater, a mud-splat crater. At the bottom of the image, to the south of the Hills, the Spirit-facing slope of the nearest big mesa can be seen. This mesa can be clearly seen in some of the panoramic images. Linked to original file. Other Odyssey images of the region : http://themis.asu.edu/pr20030411.html

This is an assemblage I made of the Odyssey 20040103a release above with overlapping MOC imagery.

Spirit's tracks

The latest MOC image showing Spirit's tracks. The parachute and backshell, heatshield-crash site and lander can be seen. Spirit is seen as a tiny black dot near the end of the track at West Spur, Columbia Hills. Linked to original file; MGS MOC Release No. MOC2-960, 3 January 2005.

Columbia Hills

An anaglyph I made from MOC files R0200357 and E0300012. Spirit arrived at the hills on its 155th sol.

Just left of center at the base of the highest peak; Husband Hill is Tennessee Valley. The arrival at the summit is planned for sol 500.

Linked to high-res file.
